چکیده

A transient finite-element model (CON2D) is applied to compute temperature, stress, and distortion of the steel shell during initial solidification. The model incorporates temperaturedependent properties, thermal shrinkage, phase transformations, and different elastic-viscoplastic constitutive equations for each phase (liquid, d, and c). The effects of sudden metal level fluctuations are simulated for different steel grades. Increasing the depth of a level drop increases distortion of the shell tip, curving it further away from the mould wall. This curvature is largest for ultra-low-carbon (ULC) and peritectic steels, and decreases for lowand high-carbon steels. This matches the wellknown plant observations of the variation of oscillation mark depth with steel grade. The results suggest that the shape of the lower side of oscillation marks is governed by thermal distortion, which is greatly aggravated by level fluctuations.

Solidification and thermal performance analysis of the low carbon steel during the continuous casting process

The present paper evaluates the effect of the nozzle characteristics on the heat transfer and phase change of the low carbon steel during the continuous casting process. A three-dimensional energy equation and a solidification model are used to drive the governing equation of the phase change and temperature distribution. A linear relation is obtained to predict the temperature-dependent of the...

Simulation of Thermal Mechanical Behavior during Initial Solidification

Mathematical models have been developed to predict temperature, stress, and shape development during initial solidification. The heat transfer model was run for typical casting conditions in the mold for typical thin slab and conventional continuous slab casters. The calculated temperatures were input to an elastic-viscoplastic finite-element stress model of the solidifying steel shell. This mo...

Thermal Simulation of Solidification Process in Continuous Casting

In this study, a mathematical model is introduced to simulate the coupled heat transfer equation and Stefan condition occurring in moving boundary problems such as the solidification process in the continuous casting machines. In the continuous casting process, there exists a two-phase Stefan problem with moving boundary. The control-volume finite difference approach together with the boundary ...

Simulation of Shrinkage and Stress in Solidifying Steel Shells of Different Grades

Thermal–mechanical behavior of the solidifying shell is important for design of taper and understanding crack formation and other defects during continuous casting of steel. A transient finite-element model, CON2D, has been developed to simulate the evolution of temperature, stress and strain in the solidifying shell during this process. The model features unified elasticviscoplastic constituti...

Development of a Model for Transient Simulation and Control of a Continuous Steel Slab Caster

A two-dimensional heat transfer model for transient simulation and control of a continuous steel slab caster is described. Slab thermal and solidification conditions are computed by the model as a function of time-varying casting speed, secondary spray cooling water flow rates and temperature, slab thickness, steel chemistry, and pouring and ambient temperatures. A solidification model that inc...
